The Nigerian music industry produced some hit songs that shaked the entire African continent as well as some collaborations with foreign-based musicians. 2019 is a year full of expectations and hope. This would be the year of stardom for so many upcoming, unsigned and independent musicians and it will also be a year of disappointment and failure for some other music artistes.
Here is a quick list of some of the music artistes who surprised us in 2018 with some standout tracks and they will be looking to keep up with such momentum by continuing their impressive run of form in their respective music careers.
Blaqbonez is a star to watch out for this year. The underground rapper has already earned himself some respect among hip-hop music lovers in Nigeria. This year, he was featured in the M.I Abaga’s L.A.M.B Martell Cypher and he produced one of the best verses on the track.
Last year, Blaqbonez got signed to 100 Crowns Entertainment and dropped his first debut album which is entitled Bad Boy Blaq.
Zlatan had a good year in 2018 after coming through on some hit songs like Chinko Ekun’s Able God. No doubt, Zlatan is the latest street pop culture who is indeed producing hit songs that have gone viral in the streets in no time.
The DMW signed music artiste already has a video Osanle which features Davido and he pioneered the Zanku Legwork dance which displaced the Shaku Shaku trend. Zlatan featured in Davido’s new song, “Bum Bum”, he is one of the promising music artistes to check out in 2019.
Uprising Nigerian rapper, Prochainz dropped his very first debut “Turn Buckle” in November 2018 and is beginning to make waves with his music.
The Lekki based star already has a collaboration with Kessesmilez and Nastyswiss on “Control”. When quizzed on the possibility of making music in 2019, Prochainz pledged to release more monster hit songs this year and hinted fans on hoping to get an EP from him. The Young goddess, Elay needs no further introduction. Lydia Anabs has been composing music since she was a kid but kicked off her music career professionally in 2018 after the release of her debut single titled Hello, by December she came back to haunt her fans with a hip-hop song titled Different and a music collaboration with Fransix and Duro on Nigeria.
Elay is one of the best female rappers in Nigeria who has been underground. In 2019, she would be letting the cat out of the bag by churning out more songs. Having built her career on a platform of consistency, Elay would be consistent in her delivery.
Oluwafemi Oladapo Oko-Eko popularly known as Slimcase is a musician known to the streets. The year 2018 was a breakthrough for Slimcase who came out with songs like Otumba Lamba and performed as a featured artiste in songs like Idowest Shepeteri, Omowumi Malowa and most recognizable, he featured on Wizkid’s Gucci Snake, a song which made him work with Wizkid and he termed it as winning a Grammy award.

The Afrobeat artiste born as Victor Adere signed a record deal with Longitude Promotions; he produced one of the hottest songs of the year 2018 in Nigeria which is Wetin We Gain.
He also dropped a love-themed song tagged No Idea still yet, Wetin We Gain remains his biggest breakthrough song so far. The promising music artiste is tipped to build more momentum and continue the progress.
#4. BURNA BOY
Burna Boy is one of the underrated musicians in Nigeria. Despite having some good hit songs in his career, yet, he remains overlooked. The case has been different this year as the Afro-fusion artiste took his music to a different dimension which paved way for his success.
After releasing his Outside music album which consists of hits like “Ye”, “Gbona” and Heaven’s Gate, the singer is gradually becoming a fans favourite in Nigeria. Towards the end of 2018, Burna Boy released Killin’ Dem Ft Zlatan and bagged home 4 awards which includes ‘Listeners Choice’, ‘Best Male MVP’ ‘Song of the Year’, and ‘African Artist of the year’ in one night at the Soundcity MVP awards all from his hit song “YE“.
#3. DUNCAN MIGHTY
Port Harcourt first son, Duncan Wene Mighty had gone through a bitter-sweet grace to grass story. It had seemed that his music career was over but his fortunes turned around after songs like Lova Lova by Tiwa Savage and Fake Love Ft Wizkid popped up.
Ever since then, he became a regularly featured artiste on people’s songs. His recent works as Miekeraso and DMW Aza, this year would be another hit year for him after his stunning comeback.
Davido Music Worldwide (DMW) singer, Peruzzi has enjoyed success as a young artiste is just a few spaces of time. The DMW vibe machine has helped to produce hit songs in 2baba’s Amaka, DMW Aza, DMW Mind, and also released his first project which is the Heartwork EP.
Although he lost the ‘Best New Act’ at the Soundcity MVP Awards to Teni Makanaki, he would be looking to build more confidence around himself to produce spectacular songs this year.
Undisputedly, the best rising music artiste in Nigeria, Teniola has won the hearts of so many Nigerian music lovers. Even with little collaborations, she has managed to break through with songs like Case, Uyo Meyo, Fargin, Lagos and Askamaya.
The young singer won the ‘Best New Act’ over Peruzzi at the Soundcity MVP Awards. Currently signed to Dr Dolor Entertainment, Teni is already making waves in musical concerts and events. This year, she would be looking to challenge Tiwa Savage, Seyi Shay, Yemi Alade for the top spot in the Nigerian music industry.
